Click It or Ticket Campaign Begins May 17th in Bluffton

As the busy summer driving season kicks off and Bluffton motorists take to the roads for the Memorial Day holiday, it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night – no excuses.

While belt use nationwide hit a record high of 86 percent in 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are still thousands of vehicle drivers and passengers who are not buckling up – and the result can be tragic. NHTSA statistics show that in 2011, 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle crashes and 52 percent were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Not wearing a seat belt at night is especially dangerous, when the risk of being involved in a crash triples.

In the interest of public safety and as a partner in this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization, the Bluffton Police Department will be increasing high-visibility seat belt enforcement efforts around the clock to save more lives on our roadways. Motorists are urged to fasten their seat belts, day and night, for each and every trip; and encourage your loved ones to always buckle up too … you could save them the cost of a ticket, and even their life.
